A TRIBUTE TO CHARLIE HADEN

A pochi giorni dalla sua scomparsa, avvenuta a Los Angeles, tracciamo un breve profilo della sua carriera di musicista. Charles Edward Haden, come molti contrabbassisti della sua generazione, ha ridotto il ruolo puramente ritmico del contrabbasso a vantaggio dell'aspetto melodico. Sebbene sia  praticamente autodidatta, è stato uno dei jazzisti che meglio hanno conosciuto il contrabbasso, al punto  da poterlo collocare tra i migliori strumentisti contemporanei. Potente, con un grande suono è stato autorevole in qualsiasi contesto stilistico e formula orchestrale. Tra le sue formazioni sono da ricordare senz'altro la "Liberation Music Orchestra" e il "Quartet West" ed è da evidenziare un' insolito (almeno per il jazz) interesse per le musiche militari e politiche. Più convenzionale è stata la sua carriera di strumentista nel quartetto di Ornette Coleman con cui ha contribuito alla nascita del free jazz.
